Carinthia (duchy)

Carinthia (German Kärnten) was a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire until its dissolution in 1806, and a crownland of Austria-Hungary until it dissolved in 1918.

Following the Carinthian Plebiscite on October 20, 1920, a small portion was taken from Austria handed over to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, today in Slovenia. Carinthia is now a federal state of Austria, while the Slovenian Carinthia is an informal province in Slovenia. Also the Canal Valley in in Italy around Tarvisio belonged to this duchy.
